EMAS III, Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, is also known as eco-auditing and is based on Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009 on the voluntary participation of organizations in a community eco-management and audit scheme.

State-approved environmental verifiers review organizations that demonstrate improvements in their environmental performance in an environmental statement. Environmental performance is assessed, but so is the administrative organization, which can also influence environmental performance in planning and execution. In this way, the verifiers gain a comprehensive picture of the company and its environmental efforts.
